Salmonella Outbreaks Prompt Major Recalls of Eggs and Sprouted Beans Across U.S. 8/1/25

A recent salmonella outbreak in the U.S. has been linked to contaminated eggs produced by August Egg Company in Hilmar, California. Between February and May 2025, at least 134 people across 10 states fell ill from Salmonella Enteritidis, with 38 hospitalizations and one reported death. The CDC and FDA traced the outbreak to eggs sold under brands such as Clover Organic, O Organics, Marketside, and Nulaid. As a result, over 1.7 million dozen eggs were recalled. Investigators confirmed that environmental samples taken from the egg production facility matched the outbreak strain, prompting a nationwide alert and the removal of products marked with plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and sell-by dates between March and June.

In a separate but concerning incident, a smaller salmonella outbreak was tied to frozen sprouted moong and moth beans distributed by Chetak LLC Group in Texas. This outbreak, caused by Salmonella Anatum, sickened 11 people across 10 states between October 2024 and June 2025. While there were no deaths, four individuals were hospitalized. The affected products were primarily sold in South Asian grocery stores, with all reported cases occurring among Asian, non-Hispanic individuals. The company issued a recall in July 2025, suspending production while federal agencies continue their investigation. Together, these two outbreaks highlight the continued importance of food safety regulations and the need for consumers to stay informed about product recalls.
