Global Health and Biosocial Course 10/29/23

It is now almost the end of October and halloween is just around the corner. As of right now, school is heavy with lots of test and work recently. Basketball season starts in just a few days so now, I will have more things I need to balance in the future.

About a week ago, I started an edX course on Global Health and viewing cases from a biosocial standpoint. So far, I find this very interesting because in this course, you analyze a case that is affecting underprivileged communities all over the world. The whole idea that these problems that people face don’t just stem from scientific problems, but rather historical ones too. Looking back on the past and understanding how certain patterns affect these problems up to date is a big part to fixing these issues.

The course right now is focused on South Africa and the pandemic of HIV and Tuberculosis on mine workers in the rural areas. From a biological view, you can understand that HIV helps break down a person’s immune system allowing for tuberculosis to become more prevalent in the body. Yet from a social perspective, you can see that through racial separation, poverty, and forcefully overworking these people leads to what happens to this day.

With the help of this course, hopefully I will get a better understanding of Global Health and use the knowledge to help me view problems in a new way.
