Duke Pre-College Course 7/16/23

I have just finished my 10 day long Duke Pre-College Course and this was an experience I will never forget. During my time there, I had a lot of fun while still learning about Global Health and engineering.

While I was there, we spent a lot of time doing labs and understanding the engineering process that goes into global health. We learned about things like 3D modeling and how it is used for medical purposes along with how tools like cryoablation are used during surgery. For our final project, we worked with a group to create an item to help solve a problem in the world. My group chose to make custom water filters for people in rural areas of India.

When designing a product, there is a long process for which you need to design the product, run trials, get it approved by the FDA, ship it out and make sure it works the way you want. Products usually take at least a few years if not longer to fully ship out to consumer use.

A big thing I learned about global health while I was there is equity over equality. In the end when you create a product for people, you want it to fit their specific needs. You want to create a relationship with your consumer because in the end, that’s who you are trying to help.

Overall, I learned a lot of new things at this camp and feel like I got a good feeling for what global health is about. There is still a lot I want to learn and explore but maybe in the future, I will choose to pursue this.
