School Violence 4/29/23

This Tuesday, one thing that I never expected to happen was a schoolwide lockdown due to a school shooter threat. In this day and age, school shootings are much more prevalent than what they used to be and it is concerning how normalized these disasters are. This all happened because of a student wanting to get out of a final, but that is how desperate students are. They are willing to risk their public record to get out of one test that they will eventually have to take. The student was caught but this is just a piece of what America has come to.

One thing that I’ve done research on and argued about is gun safety and who should be able to buy these weapons. In places where gun purchase restrictions are scarce, it can be more common for school shootings to happen. In this year alone, the U.S already had many incidents with a gun at school. NPR, a news source did the research on how many gun related incidents there have been this year and said, “In 2023, the K-12 database has recorded 89 gun-related incidents at a school so far, nearly one for every day this year” (NPR). The U.S needs a way of stopping these upwards trends of violence because we are the only ones hurting ourselves. The country is shooting themselves in the foot and stopping the youth of America from growing.

If you look deeper into the reasons for these school shootings, a lot of them have to do with personal problems the shooters have. They have no one to talk to, and are stressed out of all the messes they have to deal with at school and home. Schools needs a way of implementing more ways for students to get help and maybe make a certain curriculum easier if it is too stressful for these students.

That is just my point of view on all the incidents we have been facing this year and hopefully in the future we can fix these flaws in the system.
